The major in Modern Foreign Languages: Applied Concentration prepares students for a career in today’s increasingly global economy. The program fosters the development of cultural literacy by incorporating literary and film studies, and emphasizes an interactive approach to foreign language learning and the acquisition of the professional skills necessary to compete in the job market. Modern Foreign Language: Applied Concentration majors are strongly encouraged to spend a semester abroad.

Opportunities in Modern Language

Lake Erie College graduates in Modern Foreign Languages, Applied Concentration, further their education by attending graduate programs ranging from Foreign Languages to Education, Business and Law.

International Experiences
Lake Erie College encourages all students to participate in international experiences. Students may wish to spend a semester at one of our “sister” institutions, earning credits towards their degree while learning about other peoples and cultures.

Other international opportunities for students are Study Tours. Study Tours are two-week trips that full-
time students may take their Junior or Senior year. Most of the cost of the trip is included within tuition.

Academic Requirements

A Bachelors degree requires at least 128 credit hours. All students graduating from Lake Erie College will complete 20 semester hours of basic requirements including courses in Math, English, Computers, Public Speaking, and Foreign Language. These courses are normally completed during the Freshman year.

Students will also complete 24 hours of core liberal arts courses. These courses include the subject areas of critical thinking, aesthetic forms, scientific inquiry, cultures and values, sophisticated texts, and social sciences. Each major has course specific requirements, and any remaining credits will be considered as electives.

Required Courses for the Modern Foreign Languages Major: Applied Concentration


40 Semester hours include:
24 Hours above the 100-level in one foreign language
16 hours above the 100-level in either another foreign language offered or another major offered
