Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Arts
Lake Erie College offers programs leading to licensure for Early Childhood Education and for Middle Childhood Education. Education programs at Lake Erie College are based on a conceptual framework which embodies Learning, Effective Teaching, and Cognition (LEC). Programs are performance based with a focus on field and clinical experiences to enable the pre-service teachers to become expert practitioners. The programs are designed around the following ten indicators of success: subject matter mastery, student learning, working with a diversity of learners, planning instruction, developing instructional strategies, creating learning environments, learning effective communication skills, assessing students’ performance, developing as a professional, and working with parents/family members, school colleagues, and community members.
Pre-service teachers are expected to demonstrate evidence of dedication to helping children grow and develop a love of learning and an expansive curiosity. Pre-service teachers are required to have a liberal arts foundation in order to acquire a broad based repertoire of knowledge and to encourage critical thinking skills and dispositions that will enable them to excite their students to become lifelong learners.
It is to those ends, and to meet the licensure requirements of the State of Ohio, that the College’s programs have been designed. The State of Ohio has reciprocity with thirty-six states. Since the specifics of teacher licensure vary from state to state, there is sufficient similarity so that Ohio licensure may satisfy even those states where there is no reciprocity agreement. Lake Erie College students pass culminating tests for licensure in the upper quartile of the state with 100% of recent completers passing the tests. All educational programs are subject to review by the Ohio Department of Education and may require periodic adjustments.
