The National Alumni Board (NAB) of Lake Erie College is proud to announce that alumna Betty Yopko Weibel, class of 1980, is the 2015 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for outstanding community service and professional achievement.
This award goes to recognize one alumnus each year for his or her outstanding career achievements and distinguished service to Lake Erie College. Recipients are chosen by the NAB, which reviews recommendations submitted by alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the College.
With more than two decades of experience as the owner of Yopko Penhallurick, a public relations agency in Northeast Ohio, Weibel is well-versed in strategic planning, special event marketing and management, as well as consulting for national and international companies and organizations. She is an experienced public speaker, conducting seminars on topics involving communications and media relations.
Her recent book, The Cleveland Grand Prix: An American Show Jumping First, was published by The History Press in 2014, and honors equestrian heritage and the birth of show jumping in Northeast Ohio. Lauded by equestrian media, the book recognizes the accomplishments of early horsemen, including Lake Erie College’s own Laddie Andahazy.
Before opening her own agency, Weibel served the corporate world for nearly 10 years as vice president of a 1,200-store retail chain with responsibility for corporate communications and human resources. She began her career as a newspaper journalist and worked in sports broadcasting as an equestrian commentator for ESPN.
A resident of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Weibel is an award-winning member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), serving as a PRSA mentor to young professionals, and is APR certified. She has served on the boards for Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center and Ohio Humanities, and was recently reappointed to the Ohio Historical Society Board of Trustees by Governor John Kasich. Weibel is married to Cleveland attorney David Weibel, with whom she has one daughter.
The Distinguished Alumni Award was presented at the alumni dinner on Friday, Sept. 25 as part of the College’s annual Homecoming/Alumni Weekend festivities. For more information, contact the Lake Erie College Alumni Office at 440-375-7040.Back To News
