Financial Assistance for Study Abroad

Costs for most study abroad and off-campus programs are comparable to the cost of a semester at LEC. Students file a FAFSA as they would for studying on-campus.

Athletic Scholarships and tuition exchange program benefits do not apply to the semester in which a student is studying abroad. Financial assistance is determined based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA.

For fall and spring programs, your federal and institutional financial aid applies to programs recommended/approved by Lake Erie College (program capacity limits may apply).

Students approved for study abroad should notify the financial aid office in the semester prior to the semester they will be traveling.

The financial aid office will coordinate with the study abroad office to confirm if there are any additional charges, above LEC tuition, room and board, for the semester aboard program.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • 2.7 GPA
  • Sophomore status
  • Completion of at least one full semester at LEC
  • A clear student conduct record for one year

Additional Information

Students who study via an LEC-recommended program may be eligible for federal and institutional aid just as they would for studying on-campus. For many recommended programs, the cost can be equivalent to LEC tuition, room and board per semester.

Other forms of financial assistance may be available. Public and private organizations, businesses and churches often award grants, loans and fellowships to students traveling abroad. Scholarships may be awarded on the basis of personal attributes (ethnic/religious background, parents' field of employment, place of residence), academic major, career path and/or study abroad destination.

I WANT TO STUDY ABROAD. WILL I RECEIVE ANY ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL AID?

Students who are approved to participate in LEC’s study abroad programs may be eligible to receive additional financial assistance when there are program costs above LEC tuition, room and board. Depending on student financial need as determined by FAFSA results.

Limited funds are available for students who participate in overseas study programs. Students receiving student remission assistance from LEC are not eligible to receive additional LEC gift support for participation in a study abroad program.

IF I QUALIFY FOR A STUDY ABROAD GRANT, HOW DO I RECEIVE ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL AID?

During the semester prior to the study abroad travel, the study abroad office provides the FAO with a list of the students who are participating in approved study abroad programs, including any program costs above LEC tuition, room and board.

Students' financial aid awards are then automatically reviewed to include changes to any direct costs (room and board and/or program costs), adjustments for allowances for indirect costs (travel, miscellaneous expenses, etc.) not already covered  by LEC tuition, room and board or program costs, and then a revised aid award is processed and sent.
