Head Football Coach Gerald Hazzard and his players will give back at 2017 Rainbow Radiothon

Athletics,

On Friday, Dec. 8, 2017 from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m., LEC Storm Head Football Coach Gerald Hazzard and his team will answer calls for the University Hospitals (UH) Rainbow Radiothon, a 13-hour annual fundraiser for Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital on Star 102, WDOK 102.1.

As part of the fundraiser’s on-air patient features, Coach Hazzard will share his own family’s story at 8:30 a.m.

In 2009, his and his wife Emily’s son, Jerry IV, was born 14 weeks premature, weighing only 2 pounds. He was given a 40% chance to live. Thanks to health care professionals in the Quentin & Elisabeth Alexander Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Rainbow, Jerry IV recovered.

“My little guy was born at 26 weeks, and he spent the first 101 days of his life at the hospital,” said Coach Hazzard, who has made the Radiothon an annual volunteer tradition for his players. “We would appreciate any support you can provide.”

Last year, the Radiothon raised over $240,000. Since 2002, over $3 million has been raised to cover programs not typically covered by medical insurance, including an in-hospital, accredited tutor program as well as art and music therapy.

“Rainbow Radiothon also helps to fund innovative research, recruitment and retention of leading physicians and fellows,” according to UH.

Volunteers will operate the phones in the Trisha O'Brien Pavilion at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital.
