LEC to celebrate 50th Jumper Prix de Villes of North America

Equine,

For 50 years, the annual Jumper Prix de Villes of North America (or ‘Prize of the Cities’) has attracted superb equestrians to Lake Erie College. Spectators, dignitaries and riders will soon converge upon the George M. Humphrey Equestrian Center yet again to celebrate this event.

In the format originally established by renowned horseman Laddie Andahazy in 1968, this year’s three-day weekend Jumper Prix will take place Friday, April 13 through Sunday, April 15. The events will be judged by Annabelle Francia-Kiss, an “R” judge from New York, with Course Designer Debbie Proulx of Michigan.

On Friday, April 13, Individual Hunter Classes will ride beginning at 12 p.m., with Individual Jumper Classes to follow at 3 p.m. At 6 p.m., officials will hold the Prix’s Draw for the Order of Go during a second complimentary Exhibitor’s Party sponsored by Centerra at the Victor Manor House.

The second day, April 14, Individual Hunter Classes will begin at 8 a.m. The Chagrin Saddlery Junior Amateur Hunter Derby and Schneiders Saddlery Open Performance Hunter Derby will commence at 1 p.m. After that, Individual Jumper Stakes Classes will compete.

Activities will begin at 9 a.m. on the final day, Sunday, April 15. The Parade of Teams will lead off the 50th Anniversary Jumper Prix consisting of two rounds of competition for Emerging, High and Low Jumpers.

Weekend festivities will conclude with an Awards Ceremony to honor winners of individual and team competitions as well as the 2018 recipients of the Veronica Holt Memorial Youth Rider Award for an outstanding youth dressage rider and the Charles E. Kinney Jr. Memorial Jumper Style Award for best classical jumper style.

“We’re incredibly proud to be presenting the 50th anniversary of our signature horse show, the Jumper Prix de Villes of North America,” said Dr. Pamela Hess, dean of the School of Equine Studies. “In a Nations Cup format, the Jumper Prix de Villes still attracts the best horses and riders to compete from Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania. We invite you to come join us at the Prix!”

The Jumper Prix de Villes is recognized by the Ohio Professional Horseman’s Association. Similarly, the Dressage Prix de Villes is United States Equestrian Federation and United States Dressage Federation recognized.

The more compact Dressage Prix de Villes, judged by Cindy Canace – an “S” judge from New Jersey – will precede the Jumper Prix on Saturday, April 7 and Sunday, April 8. On opening day, Dressage team and individual rides will take place beginning at 8 a.m. The day will conclude with a complimentary Exhibitor’s Party sponsored by Centerra Country Stores at the Victor Manor House from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Teams and individuals will begin riding again at 8 a.m. on the following day, Sunday, April 8. An Awards Ceremony will follow the final class.

Lake Erie College maintains three intercollegiate equestrian teams, including IHSA Hunt Seat, IHSA Western and IDA, and a robust equine studies program containing four majors: equine entrepreneurship, equestrian facility management, equestrian teacher/trainer – English and equine therapeutic horsemanship.

The upcoming Dressage Derby of Ohio I and II will take place June 23 and 24, 208 at Lake Erie College. Judges Sue Kolstad “S” of Kentucky and Johanna Gwinn “S” of Pennsylvania will preside. For a complete list of College equestrian events, please visit lec.edu/equine-events.
