Equestrian Teams

Our competitive equestrian teams include:

English IHSA

The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team at Lake Erie College participates with other colleges in Hunt Seat Equitation competitions. Riders draw for horses and compete on the flat or over fences. Since there is no warm-up period for the rider on his or her chosen horse, IHSA competitions are a true test of both equitation and horsemanship. Lake Erie College's IHSA English national caliber team competes at an average of 8 horse shows per year. The shows are hosted by teams in the region, with many being held at either Lake Erie College or the University of Findlay. A typical show will have over 175 competitors in divisions ranging from Walk-Trot to Open Over Fences.

Lake Erie College is consistently at the top in intercollegiate competition. Our team boasts many titles including High Point Champion and Reserve High Point Champion team. Our team members have also displayed much individual success. Lake Erie College has had continued success in producing candidates for the Cacchione Cup, yielding the Regional High Point Cacchione Cup riders in 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and the Regional Reserve High Point Cacchione Cup rider in 2013.

The IHSA Hunt Seat team sends individual national qualifiers to IHSA Nationals each year. In 2014 our alumni rider brought home the National Reserve Champion title in Alumni Flat and our Cacchione Cup rider ended seventeenth in the nation. In 2015 it was one of our own again representing our region as Cacchione Cup rider and our Novice Fences rider landed eighth in the country! In 2016 we continued our Cacchione Cup streak with the same rider who qualified in 2015! Ultimately we ended our 2016 season with our Cacchione Cup rider in sixteenth place and our walk/trot rider sixth in the nation, while our team won the title of Reserve Champion team in our region.

The equestrian team has approximately 40 members. The focus for all riders is on honing their riding and competition skills, developing strong "catch riding" skills, and being compassionate, thoughtful horse people.

Our team is comprised of riders who share a strong work ethic and a winning attitude.

"I am really excited about the team this year. We have some very experienced, returning team members and a wonderful group of freshmen. Everyone is enthusiastic and working hard to improve their skills. We are looking forward to an excellent season."

English IHSA Coach Mary Pardee

Western IHSA

The Western IHSA team at Lake Erie College has weekly practices either at the George M. Humphrey Equestrian Center or at a nearby farm. Our team competes at IHSA western horse shows throughout the school year in Horsemanship and Reining classes. The team welcomes both experienced western riders and new riders who want to try the western discipline. Riders are needed from Beginner to Open levels, providing opportunities for riders of just about every level to join the team and compete!

The Western IHSA team at Lake Erie College is gaining momentum. While small in number, the team boasts some incredible talent. In 2016 Lake Erie College had two riders place as individuals at Regionals in the Open Reining division. Over the past nine years, the team has sent riders to Regionals, Western Semi-Finals and IHSA Nationals. The successes of our western equestrian athletes and their coach are a testament to their hard work and dedication, and all of us at Lake Erie College are incredibly proud of them!

"I am very excited to give the students another avenue to learn and expand their equine horizons. They have been working hard, and have been very receptive to do things that are different from what they are used to doing every day."
Western IHSA Coach Seth Clark

Debuting in the fall 2017 catalog, Lake Erie Students in any major will be able to take western seat  classes for academic credit. Western seat classes may now fulfill the riding requirements for the Equine Therapeutic Horsemanship, Equestrian Facility Management and Equine Entrepreneurship majors, as well as the Minor in Equine Studies.

IDA (Intercollegiate Dressage Association)

As the 2011 Intercollegiate Dressage Association National Champion, the Lake Erie College Dressage team is continuing its winning tradition as a national powerhouse. The team consists of students from all levels of ability interested in learning more about the sport of dressage, including riding, training, and showing. Each team member practices weekly in preparation for shows hosted throughout Michigan and Ohio.

The Lake Erie College IDA team established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in their infancy with two National Champion titles in 2011 and 2005, and two Reserve National Championship titles, in 2003 and 2006. Over the past four years we have finished our season as the Regional Reserve Champion team and have placed third, sixth and seventh nationally out of the 42 teams in IDA. 2016 was a big year for us, ending as the Region’s Reserve Champion team and also, as the Wild Card team for Nationals. Team members competing as individuals at Nationals took third place in First Level and eleventh place in Lower Training Level. One of our riders qualified to compete in the USDF/IDA Quiz Challenge and came in second place! Our riders have consistently won individual division high point rider awards each year.
