Winter dance showcase “‘Cool’ for the Winter” will feature LEC students and Cleveland hip-hop crew

Fine Arts,

Instructed by noted founder, director and lead choreographer of ELEVĀTED dance crew Howard Washington ’08, LEC dance students will perform “Music Box” in a dance showcase on Friday Dec. 1, culminating the course Dance in Its Time.

Other featured artists include Cleveland’s competitive hip-hop crew ELEVĀTED, performing “This Rise Performance,” and Akron-based hip-hop band Red Rose Panic, known for their eclectic and improvisational stage performances. All acts will exhibit their talents 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the C.K. Rickel Theater in Royce Hall for the Fine and Performing Arts.

“The showcase allows students to support one another and respectfully observe their peers exude passion on a public platform,” said Washington, a new adjunct faculty member who also instructs at Lakeshore Dance and Gymnastics and Savelli’s Dance Studios. “They have found self-expression through the art.”

In his 100-level course, students pore over live dance performances, considering musicality. They explore the work of contemporary choreographers and their cultural, philosophical, scientific and artistic origins. Dancers, athletes and equestrian riders are already dashing for seats in Washington’s kinesiology course, booked for spring.

An alumnus from Lake Erie’s class of 2008, Washington earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree concentrating in dance choreography. He said returning to teach is “extremely meaningful.”

“I am able to see where others are following the path my classmates and I set and where connection and mentoring are needed between alums and current students,” he said. “I’m thankful to come back and make an impact.”

The winter dance showcase at LEC is free and open to the public. For more information about this event, contact Howard Washington at hwashington@lec.edu.
